The Chip-In Contest and the Longest Straightest Drive Challenge take place around the front of the Sand Coulee Memorial Golf Course Club House. There is shade and people can relax with leftovers and liquid refreshments while they enjoy watching people make fools of themselves. Though it wasn't quite as hot as in 2002, you can see that the contestants and spectators were all assuming a nearly identical position - as close to horizontal as they could get. Again this year, the longest straightest drive was by a woman, Cindy B. quickly went to the sign-in desk an entered so she could claim the prize money. Arvel cashed in on the Men's LSD contest. Shortly after Tom won the Chip-In contest in a playoff against Barney, the prize money was passed out and plans were being made for next year's tourney.

Again, Thanks to all who came and made this a very enjoyable event for everyone!!       Back to Home Page
Results from the 4th Black Eagle Invitational
played on July 20, 2003
Thanks to all who came and those that participated, and helped make the 4th Annual Black Eagle Invitational Tournament one of the best ever! Special thanks to Bob and Viv who remembered how hot is was last year and thought to bring a large umbrella. It provided shade for the Putting Contest which was won by a newcomer to the tournament. The Hole-In-One prize money went uncollected, again, and now totals $96 to be carried over to the 2004 event. Fourteen pounds of hamburger and 36 hot dogs were consumed, not to mention several cases of beer, two cases of bottled water, and copius amounts of wine, desserts, chips, dips etc.,etc.,etc. The recycling man who came the morning after the tourney is still out with a double hernia after trying to lift the recycling can, the contents of which made a horrendous smashing sound as he dumped them in. Bob and Pat, our neighbor across the creek, couldn't complain about the noise this year as they attended the tourney and were major contributors to the recycling can. As the tourney gains notoriety in the international community, we are starting to see entrants from all over the world. Well, kind of.

Billy M., Head Pro from Muckabout Golf and Country Club in Tockton, England, travelled to play in this year's event, giving up the British Open, which just happens to conflict with the Black Eagle Invitational. He opted for this tourney, but was overwhelmed by the course. Back to the practice tee Billy. Driving from Arizona, and playing in their first BEI event, Al and Nancy M. made a good showing. The tourney hosted other entrants from as far away Bellevue, Federal Way, Burien, and Enumclaw! There were around 35 contestants and spectators this year. Over 400 balls made their way into the pond.
There were the usual 6 skill events plus a Men's and Women's Honey Pot for low score of the Day. The course record for the men, 15 under par, set in the inaugural tournament by Eric W. still stands though Barney had a great chance to set a new mark as he lay 7, just 45 yards from the hole. Unfortunately, it took him 4 to get down. His winning effort of 11 under was well played but was only one shot better than Tom M. with a 10 under par round. Third Place went to Jim B. at 8 under. Barney won $12 for 1st place in the Men's Division.

It was great to see Cindy W., who holds the Women's course record at eight under par, back in the competition after a serious eye injury. She finished a respectable 3rd this year at 3 over par. There was a tie for 1st place between Nancy and Margaret, two newcomers to the competition, at one over. The eventual winner was Margaret, who won the coin toss and the $9 for low score. She said wasn't going to split it with Nancy though. Faye C., pictured at the right, put her tee shot into great position but quickly got into trouble with her second shot. She managed to stay in trouble the rest of the round.

Mike R. won the Sand Trap challenge, getting two out of ten balls into the wheelbarrow. He pocketed the $13 even though his style was unorthodox. Tom M., using a more orthodox style managed one out of ten.

After seeing Mike be successful, many  of the women tried this skill challenge, but to no avail. The women's prize money went uncollected but was added to the Hole-In-One prize money.

Arvel found himself in a bit of trouble on the front side but managed a clever escape from this difficult lie. He was an enthusiastic and capable contestant and said he'd be back for next year's event. At 80 plus, Arvel still plays well and promises to give the "young bucks" a run for their money next year.
There was quite a serious competiton this year during the Closest To test. Al M. thought he had it rapped up at 4' -3" but was bettered by Doug C. who knocked it in 1'-11". That wasn't good enough either. Jerry eventually won the $12 with 1'-7".
Nancy M. blew away her competition with a shot of 1'-9". Several women went several times trying to better her mark but none came closer.

There was plenty of prize money in the Putting Contest this year too; $26 and $24 in the Mens' and Women's pots. At left, Bob C. watches in the background as Margaret cans her 9th putt in a row. At right, Margaret celebrates after making 13 in a row. Bob C. can be seen walking off having made only 10. They were both winners though.
The Hole-In-One Contest was valiantly attempted again this year, but alas and alack, no one could put a ball in the circle. In fact, there was some discussion that the circle should be enlarged. At left, is the actual hole-in-one target. It does look smaller from 110 yards away, but as you can plainly see, a golf ball should fit easily inside the circle.  Hole-In-One carryover prize money for next year, $96. The prize next year could reach $150 !!
Is me head sunburnt?
Laurene goin' for it!!
