Gawd it was hot!!!!
Nonetheless, 21 players took on the challenge of The Sand Coulee Memorial Golf Course. Some even finished. Newcomers to the tournament were flummoxed as the course pointed out the weaknesses in their games.
For the first time since it's inception Cindy W. did not win the Women's Championship - only because she didn't play. She was sidelined with a fairly serious eye injury. Cindy did manage to consume vast quantities of food and drink while watching the activities. What a trooper!
Faye C. carried off the incredibly beautiful Waterford Crystal trophy with a very good 7 under par total. Well, actually, the trophy is still in design but the tourney officials hope it will be ready for the 2003 event.
In an effort to make the course more enjoyable, the rules were relaxed a little. The scores were a little lower but the general feeling was that the course record was set using the original rules and therefore the original rules must prevail in future tournaments. The tournament course record stands at 15 under par, set by Eric Westgate in the inaugural event.
Mary C., a "walk-on", walked off with the Women's Long Drive title AND the Closet To the Pin Title with a 7' - 1" shot. Bill W. hit it in 2' - 10" to win the Men's Division. Rick won the Men's Long Drive. Vivien M. beat Patricia in the Putting Contest Playoff while Tom M. overcame all men putters. Tom also won the Sand Trap Shot. and the Chip-In contest. Tom is on shakey ground and will probably not be invited back unless he plays left handed.
Sheena won the Women's Chip In easily thrashing the competition.
The Hole-In-One purse remains uncollected and now totals $56.50.
The temperature on Tournament Sunday was at least 98 degrees. It was quite a site to see 28 people huddled in the shade of some trees all sucking down vast quantities of drink to cool themselves. Next year, the greens keeper will just turn on the sprinkler system.
Thanks to all who came and participated and brought some great appetizers and deserts. Hope to see you all again on July 20th, 2003.
