Results of the 8th Black Eagle Invitational July 29, 2007
Would you believe it? Rained out on the 22nd of July? In fact, nearly rained out on the 29th of July as well as the 10AM picture on the left indicates. By noon it at least stopped raining but the food was being set up in the garage due to threatening skies.
In spite of the weather, 26 people showed up and began play, more or less. Just before play began, Diane walks back up from the first tee. We were wondering if she forgot her sweater or her drink. By the end of the day we knew for sure.

Though Polly didn't play, she offered much moral support to them that did. Actually, neither of the two blokes she seems to be encouraging played in the tournament but they did enter the skills challenges. And though it never really warmed up to the usual 80+ degrees, it did turn out fairly nice  with just a few sprinkles. As usual, there was plenty of food and drink to brace the competitors.
On the left we see Rick, Bob and Keri just about completing the front nine. Rick ended up tied for the lead after the front nine with several others. Keri had it going for a while but found parts of the course "very frustrating". Bob plays every year and each year improves. He managed to keep the ball in play most of the round but finished out of the money this year. Since only the winner gets paid, pretty much everybody finishes "out of the money". There was plenty of competition in both the men's and women's divisions. This year, a rookie shoots the low round in the women's division, where Marie bested Diane by a shot. I just think rookies don't realize how hard the course is. Diane did win the Putting Contest and the Sand Trap Skill. The men's division ended in a two-way tie between Steve and Joe, both at 16 under, one shot off the course record set by another rookie, Angel Q., last year. (He couldn't defend this year though.)
NO Hole-In-One winner!!  No New Course Records!!
Great Playoff in Men's Division
The Front Nine Playoff begins with Steve's T-Shot, then Joe's, with an enthusiastic gallery following.
It comes down to this, Joe is lying one foot from the hole with a six under par front nine assured. Steve is 30 yards away needing to knock it in to finish at six under and force sudden death.
IT
GOES
IN
can you believe it?
After the applause and cheering die down, the contestants are informed of the sudden death rules: three shots at the Hole In One ring, alternating, from 35 yards. Closest to wins or "If it goes in, you win". After each contestant hits two shots, Joe is closest, again about a foot from the ring. Steve sets his ball, takes his stance, looks, regrips, looks, regrips, looks, regrips, squints,,,,, regrips, wiggles, waggles, squints,,,, regrips, sets. The gallery is quiet, the birds don't chirp, the frogs don't croak. He pulls the club back, the downswing looks smooth,  perfect contact, right at it.
IT
GOES
IN!!
can you believe it?
The photo was taken by Rick M. with perfect timing, capturing the first ball that has ever gone in the ring in competition.
Congratulations Steve, on your fine Rookie win. Angel will be back in 2008 to test your confidence and go for another course record. Actually, there are several players that want to see Angel back again. With Marie, who just happens to be Steve's wife, winning the women's division as a rookie, it is apparent that the rivalries are just beginning. It will be great in 2008!  July 20, 2008 to be exact.
Hole - In - One Prize Money Goes Unclaimed!
Again this year, no one was able to fit a 1.68 inch diameter golf ball into a 6 foot diameter circle, in competition. BUT, early Sunday morning when the greenskeeper was setting up the course, there was a stunning development. He had just laid down the matt for the Hole-In-One Contest and was making a guess as to how far it was. So, he goes back into the garage and get his 56 degree wedge and throws down a ball. At that moment, the sun shines through a small hole in an otherwise cloud filled sky and beams down around him. He looks towards the house and sees Glenis in the kitchen and calls her out saying "You better watch this, I have a feeling." She laughs but obliges him. Without a warm-up, without knowing the distance, he hits one shot, right into the center of the ring! Well there was so much hollering and excitement, Tina, the next door neighbor, came over to see what was going on. So, it CAN BE DONE!  And it would be well worth it to do it in competition because the carry-over prize money for 2008 is $215.00.
The Hole-In-One Prize Money in '08 could reach $250.
An eager gallery waiting for a reason to yell and drink

The Birthday cake was for Ruth who tried to make the tourney but turned around and went home due to heavy rains. We did enjoy that cake!
Now, Vivian, be a good sport!  Maybe you can win something next year.  ?
Jim and Marie with their winning swings
Sally, don't spend it all in one place
Diane never remembers to wear clothes, with pockets.  Big help Craig is.
So thanks to all who came and made the 8th Black Eagle Invitational a success, in spite of the weather. It seems that of the 12 weekends June through August, it rained NINE of them. Never mind, with enough to eat and drink it still turned out very well.
