Since there was more drinking than usual on the part of this reporter, the results from the 2nd Annual B.E.I. may be somewhat sketchy. Accurate, but sketchy. Well, probably accurate, maybe. Karen, the tournament photographer, didn't show up, so the pictures might seem a little blurry. There was another great turnout and accompanying great weather. Actually, there was more time spent eating the great snacks and gourmet food, drinking wine and beers, BS'ing, and looking at a 1965 hippie picture of Bill W. than there was spent on golfing. No doubt about it, people brought some great snacks, which were thoroughly enjoyed.
Tournament Fact: In the Men's and Women's division, the only last name on the trophy is Westgate! Eric, Cindy, Cindy, Bill.
There were two new contests added to this year's tourney: Most Consecutive Putts and Closest To out of a Sand Trap. Both new contests were won by the same player, Bob C. of Bob and Vivien fame. The putt was an extremely fast 10' left to right downhill curler. With confidence, Bob, pictured here on the right, sized up his putt, which would have been five consecutive putts if he had made it. 4 won.
Stiff competition in the putting contest, boy. The bloke on the left couldn't make more than two in a row. We think he was trying too hard. The ladies had a very hard time with this putt. I think that Sheena W., pictured below, won the ladies division with one in a row.
As mentioned above, the other new contest this year was a sand trap shot. Bob C. did win that too. His shot, pictured here at the right, came to rest about 1 foot 6 inches from the hole. The two new competitions will be kept in the tourney proper in 2002. Hopefully, someone will be able to unseat Bob as the reigning champ, and the ladies will spend more time practicing their putting than BS'ing.
Tournament Fact: The overall Longest Straightest Drive Competition was won by a woman!!
Tournament Host, Glenis R., pictured below, won the Overall Longest Straightest Drive competition with a perfectly straight shot of 333 feet, ending up dead in the middle of the 3 foot wide fairway. She was up against some very stiff competition, but prevailed, needing only to hit ONE drive.
The LSD fairway is 336 feet long and one yard wide, and very difficult to hit. The two guys above and right, really didn't make a good showing. Apparently they were used to wider fairways. The longest straightest drive by a man, Tom M., was a measly 321 feet and just inside the fairway. Tom also won the Chip-In Contest. And Bob C., winner of two other competitions, couldn't get a ball in the fairway even though he had his cheering section (pictured at right) rooting for him.
Bill W., pictured at left, won the Men's division, with a score of 8 or 9 under, well off the course record of 15 under set by his son Eric, in the inaugural tourney. Bill played very conservatively, keeping the ball in play, but precisely positioning his beer can so as not to interfere with his stance or swing.
Tournament Fact: There are no tournament facts!
Pictured to the right is Cindy W., the ONLY Women's Division Champ. That's right, Cindy won the 2000 inaugural event and 2001 as well. The big question of course is, can she three-peat. Methodical, focused, machine-like in her accuracy, she is a good bet to make it 3 in a row. The real reason is she doesn't drink, much.
Tournament Fact: The 2002 Hole-In-One Pot is up to $31.50
There were some very good shots made at the hole in one contest. In fact, Jim, playing with an exemption, nearly holed it. His ball hit the edge of the styrofoam circle, taking a big chunk out of it. His wife, Cindy, pictured at right and thinking he won all the money, is celebrating prematurely. His shot couldn't have counted as it was the warm up round. It wasn't in anyway. Jim will be billed $29.95 to repair the hole-in-one circle.
So there you have it, for what it's worth. The Results of the 2nd B.E.I.
